LUMA Energy estimates it will take 24 to 48 hours to fully restore power, conditions permitting.
Puerto Rico, with a population of more than 3 million people, was completely without power on New Year’s Eve. Reuters reported this on Tuesday, December 31, citing data from energy distribution company LUMA Energy.
According to the company at 9.30 local time, almost 90% of customers were without electricity.
LUMA Energy said it will take 24 to 48 hours to fully restore power, “if conditions permit.”
“The cause of the outage is under investigation, but preliminary results indicate an underground line fault,” the company said.
Ivan Baez, a spokesman for electricity supplier Genera, called the network outage a “significant incident” in a local radio interview.
Puerto Rico Gov. said. Pedro Pierluisi that he expects “answers and solutions” from energy officials. He called on companies to speed up the restart of generator sets, as well as inform people about the measures to restore electricity supply to the island.
Puerto Rico has faced repeated widespread power outages in recent years. So, in September 2022, the island experienced a complete blackout due to Hurricane Fiona. Before this, in 2017, the island was hit by Hurricane Maria of the penultimate, fourth category of strength. Reuters attributes frequent power outages in Puerto Rico to deteriorating infrastructure.
Earlier, due to the strong category three hurricane Rafael, which hit the southwest coast of Cuba, the residents of the island lost power again.
