A Syrian man living in Sweden was arrested in the Charlottenburg area on suspicion of assault.
In Berlin, a knife-wielding man attacked passers-by in the Charlottenburg area. The incident took place in front of a supermarket on Quedlinburger Straße, near the Charlottenburg Palace. Bild reported this on Tuesday, December 31st.
Two of the victims were seriously injured and are in the hospital. The attacker, who was probably mentally disturbed, was stopped by passers-by in the Charlottenburg area. After that the police detained him.
According to preliminary data, he is a Syrian living in Sweden. First, he allegedly attacked a man with a knife in a supermarket, and then attacked another person on the street.
The investigation is ongoing and no signs of a terrorist motive have been found.
Meanwhile, in the southern German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, police shot dead a man who stole an excavator, damaged patrol cars and injured several police officers. The attacker died on the spot.
It is not yet known if the 38-year-old man worked for the construction company where he stole the excavator. The police do not suggest a political background to the incident and ensure that there is no threat to the population.
