Europe’s infrastructure is flexible enough to allow gas from third countries to enter the EU via alternative routes, the European Commission said.
The European Union has announced its readiness for a possible termination of Russian gas transit on the territory of Ukraine. The representative of the European Commission assured that the European infrastructure is flexible enough to ensure gas supplies through alternative routes in Central and Eastern Europe. This was reported by DW on Tuesday, December 31.
“Stopping transit through Ukraine has at most a limited impact on the security of EU supplies,” he stressed.
Preparations for alternative methods have been going on for more than a year. The strengthening of infrastructure, especially through liquefied natural gas import capacity, as well as measures to improve energy efficiency and develop renewable energy sources, have ensured security of supply.
Meanwhile, the contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine expires on January 1, 2025. Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, who recently held negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated that this meeting was a response to Vladimir Zelensky’s statement on the cancellation of gas transit through Ukraine to Slovakia.
Earlier, Sibiga criticized the import of Russian LNG gas to the EU.
We remind you that Germany has banned ports from receiving tankers with Russian gas.
