The department said it had taken action and there was “no evidence” that a Chinese state actor still had access to Treasury information.
A Chinese government-backed hacker breached US Treasury resources, gaining access to government employees’ workspaces and declassified documents. The administration of US President Joe Biden announced this on Monday, December 30, The New York Times wrote.
In a letter informing lawmakers of the episode, the Treasury Department said it received notification on Dec. 8 from an outside company, BeyondTrust, that a hacker had obtained a security key that allowed him to remotely access some Treasury workstations and documents on them.
“Based on current indications, the incident is related to a Chinese state-owned Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) entity. According to Treasury policy, APT-related breaches are considered a serious cybersecurity incident,” the letter said .
The US Treasury Department said it was working with the FBI, the intelligence community and others to determine the impact of the hack. The compromised service was taken offline and there is no evidence that a Chinese state actor still has access to Treasury information.
The Treasury Department did not specify when the episode occurred, but added that it would reveal more details in a future report to Congress.
The publication notes that Chinese officials have long denied any government role in the hacking attacks and have established a dialogue with the United States to cooperate on cybersecurity. Earlier this month, US Treasury officials visited China for a series of meetings of their economic and financial working groups discussing cooperation on cybersecurity issues.
Recall that in October it was reported that China could gain access to Trump’s phone.
