The Ukrainian delegation led by Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiga arrived on Monday on an official visit to Damascus for the first time in a long time.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani announced the opening of a new page in relations with Ukraine, based on strategic cooperation. He announced this in a briefing in Damascus on Monday, December 30.
“With Ukraine, we will develop a strategic partnership at the level of political, economic and social interaction, and we will also continue cooperation with Ukraine in the scientific field,” Asaad al-Shaibani emphasized.
He added that the Syrian and Ukrainian people “have the same experience, the same suffering.”
Let’s add that Sibiga arrived on a visit to Damascus, where he met with the head of the new Syrian administration and the leader of the Islamist movement Hayat Tahrir al-Sham Ahmed al-Sharaa. The Foreign Minister noted that this is the first official visit of the Ukrainian delegation to Syria in a long time. According to him, this indicates “willingness to open a new page in bilateral relations between our countries and peoples.”
Let’s recall that on Friday, President Vladimir Zelensky announced that Ukraine sent 500 tons of flour to Syria as part of the Grain from Ukraine program in cooperation with the World Food Program.
Also last week, Zelensky said that a strategy for Syria was being developed. And the Foreign Ministry reported that contact has been established with the new Syrian authorities at the level of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
