The Slovak Foreign Ministry said it sees the Ukrainian president’s reaction to Robert Fico’s threats “as exaggerated.”
The Slovak government was angered by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s claim that Prime Minister Robert Fico had opened a “second energy field” with his threats to cut off electricity supplies to Ukraine. This was stated in a statement of the Slovak Foreign Ministry.
They added that they see Zelensky’s reaction to Fico’s threats “as exaggerated,” and also denied information about an alliance with the Kremlin’s owner, Vladimir Putin.
The Foreign Ministry said “we have provided and will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to vulnerable and seriously affected people in Ukraine to the best of our ability.”
“In addition, our colleagues in Ukraine at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should not forget the fact that Russian gas transported to Ukrainian territory brings a lot of income to Ukraine, which is important for the country’s economy,” said they in a statement.
The department emphasized that since Ukraine is “in a protracted military conflict,” it “must refrain from creating new adversaries or come up with the idea of a “second front.”
“The government of the Slovak Republic is obliged to protect, first of all, the strategic interests of our country, our citizens and the European Union, it will act accordingly, regardless of whether the Ukrainian side approves it or not, ” said representatives of the Slovak Foreign Ministry.
It was previously known that Fico threatens to stop the export of electricity to Ukraine because it refuses to transit Russian gas from January 1, 2025. He made the corresponding statement after a trip to Moscow and a meeting with Putin .
President Volodymyr Zelensky then said that Slovakia’s threats to cut electricity supplies to Ukraine could cost Ukraine at least $200 million a year, which Ukraine pays for imports.
