After the overthrow of the Assad regime in Syria, the development of a new constitution could take up to three years, and holding elections up to four years.
This was stated by the de facto leader of Syria Ahmed al-Sharaa, Reuters reports.
The head of the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, al-Julani, gave an interview to Al Arabiya, in which he outlined key stages in the future of Syria.
He also expressed hope that the administration of newly elected US President Donald Trump will lift the sanctions imposed on Syria.
The leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham said that he does not want to spoil relations with Russia.
He stressed that Russia is the “second most powerful country in the world” and has “strategic interests” in Syria.
“We don’t want Russia to leave Syria in this way, it will lead to a deterioration in its relations with our country,” al-Sharaa said.
According to him, the liberation of Syria guarantees the security of the country and the region, including the Persian Gulf, for the next 50 years.
Other promises and assessments of al-Sharaa:
- The process of writing a new constitution can take up to 3 years in order to create a stable document for a long time.
- Organizing elections takes about 4 years, including a census.
- The Idlib model does not suit all of Syria, but it will become the basis for further steps.
- The current form of appointments is a preliminary stage, preparatory to the creation of a long-term interim government.
- The National Dialogue Conference will bring together all sectors of society and will include announcements of the dissolution of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham.
-
The Syrian Ministry of Defense will accept Kurdish forces, recognizing them as an integral part of the Syrian nation.
-
Riyadh has provided significant support to Syria and has great investment opportunities for the republic.
-
Syria looks with hope to the Trump administration, counting on the lifting of sanctions and a departure from the policies of the previous government.
-
Syria does not want the Russian presence to harm bilateral relations.
Sharaa leads Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which overthrew Bashar al-Assad on December 8, ending decades of rule by the Assad family and a 13-year civil war. He said that HTS would be disbanded at the National Dialogue Conference.
Sharaa also expressed hope that the administration of newly elected US President Donald Trump will lift the sanctions imposed on Syria. Senior US diplomats visiting Damascus this month said Shara was pragmatic.
