As Russia is expected to withdraw from Syria after years of supporting the Assad regime, the country’s de facto leader emphasized “strategic interests” with the “second most powerful country in the world.”
The leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, said that after the fall of the regime of Bashar al-Assad, he does not want to damage relations with Russia. He spoke about this in an interview with Al-Arabiya.
In particular, he said that Russia is the “second most powerful country in the world” and has “strategic interests” in Syria.
“We don’t want Russia to leave Syria in a way that will lead to the deterioration of relations with our country,” al-Sharaa said.
Separately, he expressed hope that the new US administration under the leadership of Donald Trump will lift the sanctions against Syria.
We remind you that after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, Russia withdrew its military from the front line in the north of the country and from the posts in the Alawite Mountains, but did not leave the two main bases .
Bloomberg previously wrote that Russia is negotiating with the new Syrian leadership to maintain bases at the naval port in Tartus and the Khmeimim airbase.
