The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry responded to the threats of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to suspend electricity supplies to Ukraine.
The department’s statement was published today, December 28, on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
We remind Prime Minister Robert Fico that Slovakia’s supply of critical volumes of electricity to Ukraine is not charity: Ukraine pays Slovakia a lot of money for it, the Foreign Ministry notes.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminds that Ukraine has always been self-sufficient in the production of electricity, but now it is sometimes forced to import it only because of Russian crimes – the occupation of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, constant and targeted missile attacks on civilian infrastructure, the energy system, generation facilities and distribution networks.
By senselessly threatening to cut off the electricity Ukraine buys and does not receive as a gift, Prime Minister Robert Fico is actually taking sides with the Russian dictator. Now these are the only two figures in the world who threaten to leave Ukrainians without electricity in winter,” the department notes.
The Foreign Ministry added that joint work with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is also indicated by Fico’s actual recognition of his desire to oust American and other energy resources from the European market in the interests of maintaining the dependence of European countries on Russia.
We are convinced that in the interests of the Slovak people, the government of Slovakia should work with its neighbors and the whole of Europe to diversify energy supplies, in particular, agree now on gas supplies from the United States, and not hope for continued dependence on Russia and the policy of ousting American and other energy resources from Europe, – noted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Foreign Ministry also noted that Slovakia is part of the single European energy market and must comply with common European rules.
We call on the European Commission, in cooperation with ENTSO-E, to respond to Slovak threats of arbitrary decisions, the department emphasized.
