The Estlink 2 power cable running between Finland and Estonia was damaged on December 25th.

The Finnish police are not removing the “Russian trace” in the case of damage to the Estlink 2 electrical cable reported by Yle on Thursday, December 26.

The 658 MW Estlink 2 cable, which runs between Estonia and Finland, was disconnected due to an accident on December 25. Another line, Estlink 1, continues to operate between the two countries, but its capacity is 358 MW only.

Fingrid, the company responsible for Finnish electricity grids, said there were two vessels near the cable at the time of the incident, but did not specify their identities.

MarineTraffic, a maritime traffic monitoring service, reported that one of the vessels (Xin Xin Tian 2) was a Hong Kong-flagged container ship.

Swedish service Aftonbladet added that the second vessel (tanker Eagle S) was registered under the flag of the Cook Islands and was sailing from St. Petersburg to Egypt. This tanker is part of the Russian shadow fleet. It was noted that by the time the cable damage was discovered, the ship had reduced speed.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said the fault would not affect the country’s electricity supply. However, the police began investigating the incident, considering, in particular, the vandalism version.

We remind you that on December 25 it became known that the Estlink 2 underwater power cable connecting Finland and Estonia was damaged.

Previously, the Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3 was under investigation after two fiber optic cables were severed in November. One of them is connected to Finland and Germany, and the other – Sweden and Lithuania.
