Currently, more than 3 thousand patients are waiting for transplant surgery. From 2024, as part of the medical guarantee program, the state will fully cover the costs of organ transplantation.
During 11 months of this year, Ukrainian doctors performed 467 internal organ transplants. In total, doctors transplanted 311 kidneys, 93 livers and 63 hearts. Of these, more than 65% are transplants from a deceased donor. The Ministry of Health (MOH) reported this on Wednesday, December 25.
More transplants took place at the First Medical Association of Lvov, the National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology named after OO Shalimov and the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
As noted by the Ministry of Health, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation also took place. The procedure was performed 376 times a year, of which 54 were children. Last year there were 15% fewer such transplants. More such transplants took place at the National Cancer Institute, the Cherkasy Clinical Oncology Center and the Kiev City Center for Nephrology and Dialysis.
In addition, the first allogeneic transplant was performed at the National Cancer Institute. Today such operations are taking place in four institutions in Ukraine.
“Despite the challenges of the war, Ukrainian doctors continue to perform some of the most complex transplants, in particular lungs. For the first time such an operation will be performed in 2021. In addition, transplantologists in Ukraine perform transplantation of complex organs, such as heart and kidney, heart and lung, pancreas and kidney Currently, more than 3,000 patients are waiting for life-saving operations,” added the Ministry of Health.
A patient who underwent the first heart-lung transplant in the history of Ukraine died in a hospital in Lviv.
It was previously reported that Kyiv doctors transplanted a heart into a 12-year-old boy.
