During martial law, about 50 people died trying to illegally cross the border across the Tisa River.
Representative of the State Border Service of Ukraine Andrey Demchenko spoke about this today, December 23, during a national telethon.
There are desperate people who choose a border line that runs along rivers in order to try to swim or cross mountain rivers, which pose the greatest threat to people’s lives and health,” he noted. “For example, the Tisza River, unfortunately, has already claimed about 50 lives during martial law of people who illegally tried to cross the border in this section.
According to Demchenko, border guards make attempts to illegally cross the border every day, although with the onset of cold weather there are fewer of them.
It is worth noting that the last time the press service of the State Tax Service reported the discovery of a drowned person in Tisza was on December 18.
It was then noted that on December 17, Ukrainian border guards received information from their Romanian colleagues about the discovery of a human body in the river – the deceased was a 39-year-old Ukrainian citizen from the Kyiv region. His body was found in the river 5 m from the Romanian coast, between the settlements of Bedevlya (Ukraine) and Remeta (Romania).
