Hungary has not abandoned the Ukrainian gas transit route, Viktor Orban indicated.
Budapest is negotiating with Moscow and Kiev to maintain gas transit, even if it is imported through the Turkish Stream pipeline. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said this at a briefing, Reuters reports on Saturday, December 21.
“We are now trying a trick… what if the gas, when it enters the territory of Ukraine, will no longer be Russian, but will belong to consumers. So, the gas entering Ukraine will no longer be Russian .but will be Hungarian.” , said Orbán.
According to him, it seems that “negotiations are ongoing,” and it is not yet clear whether Ukraine and Russia will agree to it. At the same time, Hungary itself does not leave the Ukrainian transit route.
The agency said that this year Hungary imported about 7.5 billion cubic meters of Russian gas through the Turkish Stream gas pipeline and additional volumes through Romania. According to Orban, domestic gas production is approximately 1-1.5 billion cubic meters.
As you know, the contract for the transfer of Russian gas through Ukraine, signed between Naftogaz and Gazprom, will expire this year. Ukraine will not continue the agreement.
Two days ago, President Vladimir Zelensky said that Ukraine is ready to send gas to European countries if it does not come from Russia.
