The Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Federation said that the Russians captured 4,500 square meters. km in 2024, but according to analysts’ estimates, it is actually 3306 sq. km.
The Chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, significantly increased the information about the territories of Ukraine occupied by the Russian army in 2024. This is stated in a report of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Gerasimov said on December 18 that Russian troops had captured about 4,500 square kilometers by 2024. However, ISW found confirmation of the capture of only 3,306 square kilometers.
Gerasimov’s exaggerated figure contrasted with more accurate statements by Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov at a meeting of the Russian Defense Ministry board on December 16. He said that the average daily speed of Russian troop advances is 27.9 square kilometers.
Belousov also said that the Russian invaders captured about 99% of Lugansk region, 70% of Donetsk region, about 74% of Zaporozhye region and about 76% of Kherson region. These data also have some inaccuracies, but are close to the Institute’s assessment.
“According to ISW estimates, Russian troops occupied almost 99% of Lugansk region, 66% of Donetsk region and 73% each of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions,” the analysts added.
As is known, on the night of November 24-25, a Russian sabotage and reconnaissance group tried to breach the border in the Cossack Lopan area of the Kharkov region.
