The allies continue to discuss the question of what “an international presence on the territory of Ukraine to ensure a ceasefire” could look like.
Germany may join in securing a future ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, but it is too early to talk about a specific format for the peacekeeping force. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced this on Monday, December 16, Reuters wrote.
So, speaking to journalists in Berlin, Pistorius supported other European politicians, saying that it is too early to make a decision on the presence of troops in Ukraine, because there are no negotiations or a ceasefire.
“If there is a cease-fire, then, of course, the Western community, NATO partners, potentially the UN and the European Union will have to discuss how to ensure such peace, like a cease-fire. And it is it is clear that Germany, as the largest economy in Europe, will play an important role here,” he said.
Pistorius added that it was difficult to determine what Germany’s role might be, as everything depends on the terms of the ceasefire and the possible mandate of the peacekeeping force.
“There are now more questions than answers and that is why I cannot give you a comprehensive answer,” said the German Defense Minister.
The Netherlands has admitted the possibility of sending an EU peacekeeping mission to Ukraine without a unanimous decision by all bloc countries, if a ceasefire agreement is reached.
