Despite the recent pardon of around 200 people, more than a thousand people convicted on political charges continue to remain behind bars in Belarus, according to human rights activists.
In Belarus, Antonina Konovalova, who was a confidant of opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya during the 2020 presidential elections, was released from prison. His mother Anna Konovalova wrote this on Sunday, December 15, on Facebook.
“Today is the happiest day of our life. My daughter we have finally released this moment with trepidation and hope that everything will be free, and this is the most important thing,” the woman wrote.
Antonina Konovalova and Sergei Yaroshevich have two children. Daughter Nastya is now 8 years old, son Ivan is 10. All this time, the children lived in Poland with their grandmother Anna Konovalova.
According to Radio Liberty, in the summer of 2020, Antonina Konovalova joined the team of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and became a confidante of the presidential candidate. He was detained in September 2020 after the start of mass protests against election fraud in favor of Alexander Lukashenko. He was fined under the article for participating in an unauthorized rally, but then was not released, but a criminal case was opened against him.
On May 7, 2021, the Minsk Regional Court sentenced Antonina Konovalova and her husband Sergei Yaroshevich to five and a half years in prison. Later, Sergei was sentenced to another nine months in prison under the article of malicious disobedience to the requirements of the administration of the correctional institution. In prison, Antonina almost lost her sight.
It is known that in early December Lukashenko signed a decree pardoning 29 people. This is the seventh wave of amnesty of political prisoners in Belarus in the past six months. The names of those pardoned have not been officially announced;
