The Georgian Electoral College elected former football player Mikheil Kavelashvili as president, who was the only candidate nominated by the ruling Georgian Dream party. This was reported by the Echo of the Caucasus.

Mikheil Kavelashvili is the only presidential candidate nominated by the Georgian Dream. He received 224 votes, one ballot was spoiled.

Kavelashvili is one of the leaders of the formal breakaway group Power of the People. He was a member of the Georgian Parliament of the IX and X convocations. In the last election, held on October 26, Kavelashvili entered parliament as number 18 on the Georgian Dream list.

Kavelashvili is a football veteran, having played for Lokomotiv Tbilisi, Russian Spartak-Alania, Manchester City and Swiss clubs, and was a player of the Georgian national team.
