The country may take such a step because of the 25% import duty that Trump will introduce.
In response to US President-elect Donald Trump’s threats to increase tariffs on Canada, the country may cut off energy flows to the United States. This was said by the Prime Minister of Ontario, Canada’s largest province, Doug Ford, CNN reports on Friday, December 13.
“We’re going to get to the point where we’re going to cut their power all the way to Michigan, New York State and even Wisconsin,” Ford said.
He warned that Canada must use every tool in its arsenal if Trump follows through on his threat to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian imports on his first day in office.
As the newspaper notes, since Ontario is not a major crude oil producer, Ford’s threat likely applies specifically to electricity imported into the United States from Canada.
“Canadians will suffer, but I can assure you of one thing: Americans will feel the pain, too, as unfortunate as it is,” Ford said.
Trump’s proposed tariffs could plunge Canada’s economy into a painful recession. Ford’s threat indicates that Canada could use a violent response that could temporarily cut off access to electricity and gasoline for some Americans.
Trump previously said he would impose tariffs of 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico for their failure to stem the flow of illegal migrants and drugs from these countries into the United States.
Trump also proposed to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that his country become the 51st US state, and that Trudeau himself be its governor.
