The pop diva posted photos with the pontiff on Instagram stories and images made with AI are yet another provocation to the Catholic Church
Madonna, aged 66, sparked controversy with the Catholic Church in publications made this Friday, the 13th, where she appeared in manipulated images alongside Pope Francis, aged 87. The singer, who has already been excommunicated three times by the religious institution, appears in sensual poses, hugging the pontiff, in montages created by artificial intelligence.
In August, the artist was seen at the Vatican, wearing a white hat and walking through the streets of Rome with a lace parasol. She was filmed by a fan as she got out of her car in front of the Vatican Museum.
Madonna has a troubled and long-standing relationship with the Catholic Church. She has already faced three excommunications and even requested a personal meeting with the Pope Francisco to resolve old differences.
Excommunicated singer
The first excommunication occurred in 1989, when she released the song “Like A Prayer”, whose video showed the singer kissing a black figure representing Jesus Christ, generating fierce criticism, including from the clergy.
In 1990, with the success of “Like A Virgin”, a song that strongly explores female sexuality, the Catholic Church intensified its opposition to the artist. At the time, the Pope John Paul II asked the faithful to boycott concerts Madonna in Italy, inciting a movement against her among her followers.
