The protesters are calling for new elections to be called and for the release of citizens detained during the protests.
In Tbilisi, public sector workers walked out to protest against the government’s postponement of Georgia’s EU accession negotiations. Among them are teachers and doctors. Interpressnews and Echo of the Caucasus reported this on Wednesday, December 11.
It is indicated that representatives of the public sector joined the protesters near the Georgian Parliament building. Protesters greeted the procession of civil servants with applause.
As journalists point out, civil servants are protesting not only because of the refusal to apply for EU membership until 2028, but also because of forms of intimidation of protesters.
“We are people engaged in public service, and the purpose of our protest is to convey to the public, including those who now represent our employers, our voice that we remain loyal to the Constitution and society, we remain committed at the same time We call on them to stop violence against us, the use of various forms of intimidation, which has been many recently,” an employee of the mayor’s office told reporters.
Protests in the center of the capital of Georgia continued for 14 days. This night of anti-government protests in Tbilisi continues peacefully.
A new peak of the protest is expected closer to Saturday, December 14, when the parliament is set to elect a new president.
As we have already written, on November 28, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced that Georgia rejects negotiations on EU accession until 2028.
After that, people came out in Tbilisi to protest en masse against the government’s actions. Security forces are now trying to disperse the protesters using water cannons.
Subsequently, four opposition political forces in Georgia, which passed the threshold in the parliamentary elections, published a joint statement.
