Part of Hafez al-Assad’s grave was burned, including the coffin, which was dragged out and burned.

Syrian rebels in the city of Qardaha destroyed the tomb of former President Hafez al-Assad, the father of the country’s ousted leader Bashar al-Assad. The BBC reports this in relation to images published online.

In particular, the photos show that part of Assad’s father’s grave has been burned, including the coffin, which appears to have been dragged out and set on fire.

The photos show rebels in camouflage uniforms watching burning parts of the grave.

Dictator Hafez al-Assad ruled Syria from 1971 until his death in 2000, when power passed to his son. He was buried in his family mausoleum.

As you know, on December 8, rebel forces in Damascus declared the capital “free” from Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia. The day before, an interim prime minister was appointed in Syria.

In Russia they talked about Assad’s “safety” and his future
