The number of registered cases of domestic violence in Ukraine increased by almost 80% compared to last year. This October, 8,185 such criminal offenses were registered.
During 9 months of 2024, the hotline of the public organization in the field of protecting the rights of women and children La Strada – Ukraine received 33 thousand calls about domestic violence. People who have been victims of psychological and physical violence often come to us. The press secretary of the public organization Ekaterina Cherepakha spoke about it on Tuesday, December 10, in an interview with hromadske.
He noted that last year there were almost 40 thousand such calls, mostly from women.
“When the rates remain so high, despite the fact that millions of women with children leave, it means that this is really a problem that needs attention and response,” emphasizes Ekaterina Cherepakha.
He said they often make phone calls because of psychological violence. In second place is physical.
“The difference between them is not significant, it is a small percentage,” he pointed out.
There are fewer complaints about economic violence. And the smallest percentage is about sexual violence.
“But it’s not because it rarely happens, but because it’s not that easy to talk about. It’s a very sensitive topic. And about sexual violence as a type of domestic violence, there’s less conversation “Many people do not recognize rape in marriage at all. In fact, even if there is a stamp in the passport, it is the same sexual violence,” the public figure emphasized.
Ekaterina Cherepakha added that the number of complaints about violence in the families of military personnel or veterans is growing.
The number of registered cases of domestic violence in Ukraine increased by almost 80% compared to last year. This was reported by the head of the department for combating domestic violence of the Prosecutor General’s Office, Irina Shurkno.
