German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed confidence in the possibility of reaching agreements with newly elected US President Donald Trump on a general strategy to support Ukraine.
He stated this while commenting on the results of a recent telephone conversation with a Republican, writes Reuters.
I am confident that we can develop a common strategy for Ukraine. My main principle remains that nothing can be decided without taking into account the opinion of the Ukrainian people,” Scholz noted.
The German politician said that he had a detailed conversation with Trump, during which they discussed security issues and support for Ukraine. According to him, the chancellor’s team maintains direct contact with the advisers to the US president-elect on these issues.
When asked whether Ukraine might have to agree to territorial concessions to end hostilities, Scholz said that nothing could be decided “over the heads” of the Ukrainians.
The topic of Ukraine occupies a central place in German political discourse, especially in the context of early elections scheduled for February 2025. The elections were announced after the collapse of the tripartite coalition led by Scholz, which intensified the political struggle in the country.
Friedrich Merz, the leader of the conservative opposition in the CDU, called on Germany to transfer Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. Scholz opposed this proposal, saying that such a move could provoke an escalation of the conflict.
