Law enforcement seized 320 bags of drugs. The cocaine is worth about $250 million at black market prices.
The largest shipment of cocaine in the country’s history, weighing 9.5 tons, was confiscated in the Dominican Republic. The drugs were found in a shipment of bananas, Reuters reported on Saturday, December 7.
A shipment of bananas and drugs arrived from Guatemala to the port of the capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. Next he had to go to Belgium.
Law enforcement found 320 bags containing approximately 9,528 kilograms of cocaine. The drugs are worth about $250 million at black market prices.
This is the largest seizure of cocaine in the Dominican Republic, far surpassing the 2,580 kilograms of drugs seized in 2006 in the port of Santo Domingo.
The InSight Crime Foundation, which specializes in the analysis of organized crime, warned that the recorded drug seizures this year indicate that the Caribbean is once again becoming a major smuggling route from Colombia to Europe, where it is estimated that more than consumption will double from 2011 to 2023.
“As demand grows, drug traffickers are scrambling to meet it, making the Caribbean an ideal conduit for smuggling cocaine into Europe,” the foundation’s report said.
It was previously reported that 3 tons of cocaine were found in Ecuador in boxes with bananas for Russia. The cargo is planned to be delivered to the port of St. Petersburg.
