Syrian rebels said they had captured the southern city of Daraa on Saturday. It is the fourth city lost to Bashar al-Assad’s forces in a week.
The capture of Daraa comes after rebels said last night that they had advanced to the outskirts of the city of Homs. Capturing this city would cut off the capital Damascus from Russia’s coastal bases.
Social media video verified by Reuters showed people shooting into the air in the city’s main square in Daraa in celebration, while others pulled down a monument.
The AFP agency, citing the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), confirms the transfer of 90% of the territory of the Dariya province and the city itself to the control of the rebels.
Also on Friday, a US-backed alliance led by Syrian Kurds captured Deir el-Zor, the government’s main foothold in the vast eastern desert.
In Daraa, a monument to the former Syrian president and father Bashar al-Assad was demolished.
The Russians told Assad that their support would be limited, because Moscow has other priorities, SkyNews writes.
