The EU asks the US to ease sanctions against the Russian Gazprombank.
Bloomberg writes that this bank plays a key role in ensuring the flow of Russian gas to the EU.
Among the options being considered in the negotiations is whether payments can be legally made through Gazprombank’s Luxembourg subsidiary, or whether it is better to use other payment channels.
According to Bloomberg interlocutors, talk about lifting sanctions began after European governments and companies warned the United States that sanctions against Gazprombank would create a risk to the security of supplies in the region.
As the agency notes, it is now being discussed whether payments for gas should be allowed through a bank subsidiary in Luxembourg or whether it is better to use other options.
At the same time, negotiations on lifting sanctions from Gazprombank did not stop even after Vladimir Putin canceled the requirement for foreigners to pay for Russian gas through this bank.
Slovakia and Hungary continue to purchase Russian gas. On December 4, Hungarian Foreign Minister Petr Szijjatro announced that the country’s government had sent a request to the United States to allow EU countries to pay for Russian gas through Gazprombank.
The United States imposed sanctions against Gazprombank on November 21, 2024.
