The TAURUS rocket is being modernized in Germany.
According to DW, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz still refuses to supply these long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine. But in Germany itself there are big plans for TAURUS: if in 2024 the production of this weapon was almost curtailed, now the media are reporting the preparation of two large government orders.
The first of these will be devoted to improving most of the approximately 600 TAURUS missiles already in service with the Bundeswehr. It is assumed that after modernization, they, in particular, will “learn” to constantly fly at low altitude and hit a target even with partial failures in the operation of the GPS satellite system. In addition, the service life of these missiles will increase from 25 to 40-45 years.
The second planned government order, according to Der Spiegel, will provide for the production of 600 missiles of a new modification, called TAURUS Neo, for the German army. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has already asked the Bundestag committee to take into account the costs of this in the 2025 budget – according to experts, 2.1 billion euros will be required.
There should be no problems with the allocation of funds: most political parties in Germany agree on the need to increase and improve the arsenal. The plant in Bavaria, which produces cruise missiles, has already begun to expand.
