On December 5, the Verkhovna Rada supported the bill on the creation of a jury trial in Ukraine.
232 deputies voted for Law No. 3843 in the first reading.
Law No. 3844 “On the Judicial System” in connection with the creation of a jury trial was supported by 237 people’s deputies.
Although the Constitution of Ukraine provides for the possibility of people’s participation in the administration of justice through juries, the principle of their work is still based on Soviet practice, writes “Public”.
The authors of bill No. 3843 argued that the latest judicial reform to introduce a “jury trial” instead of people’s assessors turned out to actually be a substitution of concepts.
Like, the Institute of People’s Assessors, which existed in legal proceedings on the basis of Art. 124 of the Constitution of Ukraine (1996 edition), the legislators simply called the institution of juries and thus reported on the alleged implementation of constitutional provisions.
People’s deputy from Batkivshchyna, Mikhail Tsymbalyuk, speaking at the podium, said that the jury should have been created 10 years ago, but this requires “a lot of work by lawyers.”
The Ministry of Justice previously claimed that a “classic jury trial” could start working in Ukraine as early as 2021.
