This is the first conversation in more than two years between the head of the Russian General Staff and the head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The Russian Chief of the General Staff General Valery Gerasimov last week called the head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Charles Brown. The New York Times reported this on Wednesday, December 4, citing Pentagon representatives.
It is understood that the phone conversation took place last Wednesday – six days after Russia launched a new medium-range ballistic missile over Ukraine, apparently in response to Ukraine’s use of American weapons to attack deep into the Russian Federation.
According to the publication, during the conversation Gerasimov told Brown that the launch of the Oreshnik missile was allegedly planned before the US administration authorized Ukraine to use American missiles to attack military targets in Russia.
Brown’s spokesman, Jeryl Dorsey, after being contacted by reporters, said that “at the request of General Gerasimov, General Brown agreed not to publicize this call.”
According to Dorsey, they discussed several global and regional security issues, including the conflict in Ukraine.
As the publication notes, it is unclear why Gerasimov wanted the phone conversation with Brown to remain secret.
The last time Gerasimov spoke with the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff was in October 2022, when this post was held by General Mark Milley.
