Mike Johnson commented on Biden’s call for Congress to appropriate an additional $24 billion to increase military support for Ukraine.
The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, said that before the inauguration of Donald Trump he did not plan to raise the issue of additional aid to Ukraine proposed by the White House. He said this in a briefing on Wednesday, December 4, Voice of America reports.
“It’s not up to Joe Biden to make that decision. We have a new president-elect, and we plan to wait and use the new commander in chief’s strategy through all of this,” the spokesman said.
He added that he does not plan to vote for the Joe Biden administration’s initiative to allocate $24 billion to Ukraine in a resolution on additional government funding.
Johnson noted in this regard that events are happening in Ukraine every hour, and after the election of Donald Trump as the next president, the dynamics of Russia’s war against Ukraine is already changing.
“So, I don’t expect there to be any funding for Ukraine right now,” Johnson said.
At the same time, the leader of the Democratic faction in the lower house of the US Congress, Pete Aligar, noted in his part that the Democrats are very supportive of Ukraine and will continue to support it in the fight against Russian aggression.
Let’s recall that at the end of November, Joe Biden called on Congress to allocate an additional $24 billion to bolster military support for Ukraine.
As reported, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured NATO and Kyiv of their readiness to fully use the fund for Ukraine, for which the US Congress had previously given its consent.
