The investigation may end with the historic conclusion that Nicolas Maduro is not the legitimately elected president of the country.
The UN Human Rights Committee has launched an investigation into the Venezuelan government into possible widespread fraud in the July 2024 presidential elections. The EFE agency wrote this on Tuesday, December 3.
As part of this case, the Committee is asking the Venezuelan authorities to preserve all election documents, including vote counting protocols.
The Committee’s report states that the state should refrain from destroying materials related to the elections, in particular, protocols and documents necessary to establish the results.
The discovery of the case was announced by lawyer Paulo Abrau, former executive secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. He noted that the decision was the result of a complaint filed by lawyers from the Washington, DC-based firm IHR Legal, accusing the Venezuelan government of fraud, restrictions on foreign voting and lack of transparency.
“Millions of Venezuelans abroad who have the right to vote have been denied the opportunity to participate in elections,” the Committee said in a statement.
The lawyers who filed the complaint called the decision “an important step in the fight for democracy in Venezuela.”
It will be recalled that on July 29, the current President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, was declared the winner of the elections with 51% of the vote, compared to 44% for the leader of the opposition, Edmund Gonzalez. Opposition parties say their candidate won 70% of the vote.
After the announcement of the results of the presidential election, spontaneous rallies began in the country. Their participants believe that the authorities rigged the voting results in favor of Maduro.
