The inclusion of pysanky in the Representative List of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity took place at the initiative of the “Ukrainian community in Estonia.”
At the 19th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Ukrainian pysanka was recognized as a cultural heritage of humanity. The recognition of the pysanka was announced on Tuesday, December 3, by the Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Nikolai Tochitsky.
The session of the UNESCO Committee took place in the capital of Paraguay, Asuncion.
“The Representative List of Tangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity includes our national element – “Ukrainian Easter egg: tradition and art”… We declare to the whole world: the living heritage binds us, gives us a feeling of belonging and defining our identity,” said Tochitsky.
“While the aggressor destroys our cultural institutions, kills our artists, tries to erase our identity, we continue to fight for us This is our unity and will not be broken,” added the head of the Ministry of Culture.
The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity contains 611 elements corresponding to five regions and 140 States Parties to the Convention. From Ukraine, this list includes “Petrykivka decorative painting as a phenomenon of Ukrainian ornamental folk art” in 2013, “The tradition of Kosovo hand-drawn ceramics” in 2019 and “Ornek – Crimean Tatar ornament and knowledge about it” in 2021.
The Royal Canadian Mint has released a Pysanka coin. Its design was developed by Ukrainian-Canadian artist Tanya Mykytyuk.
