Violence against peaceful demonstrators is unacceptable, and the Georgian government must respect the will of the Georgian people and the country’s Constitution, Kallas emphasized.
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaya Kallas, did not rule out the introduction of sanctions against Georgia amid protests in the country over the ruling party’s refusal to integrate into Europe. The dpa agency reported this on Sunday, December 1.
Kallas emphasized that violence against peaceful demonstrators is unacceptable, and that the Georgian government must respect the will of the Georgian people and the country’s Constitution. The possible consequences for Georgia from the EU will be discussed together with the member countries, Kallas explained during his visit to Kyiv. He named sanctions as possible measures, as well as restrictions on the issuance of visas.
It is clear that the Georgian government does not respect the freedom of the Georgian people in relation to the future of Europe, Kallas added. However, EU sanctions can only be imposed with the consent of all states in the bloc.
However, this is unlikely, as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has recently expressed support for the Georgian authorities.
As you know, on November 28, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced that the country is abandoning EU accession negotiations until 2028.
This caused another wave of anger in the society. New large-scale protests began in Tbilisi.
