The US Secretary of State confirmed his support for Ukraine and discussed the country’s prospects for joining NATO.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke on the phone with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiga, where, in particular, they discussed the issues of Ukraine’s accession to NATO. This was reported by the US State Department.
Blinken expressed condolences for those killed in the massive Russian missile attack on critical energy infrastructure on November 27-28. He assured that the United States will continue to support Ukraine, in particular, in strengthening its defense on the eve of winter.
At NATO, the Secretary briefed the Ukrainian Minister on US goals for continued support for Ukraine, which will be discussed at upcoming NATO meetings and within the Ukraine Defense Contact Group.
Blinken reaffirmed the United States’ strong commitment to a sovereign and democratic Ukraine and to supporting a just and lasting peace based on the UN Charter.
The parties also discussed separately the events on the front, the provision of aid to Ukraine and the next packages of financial support from the United States.
On the eve of this conversation, Sibiga addressed international partners in a letter in which he called for the invitation of Ukraine to NATO, stressing that this decision could be made in the near future.
In a letter seen by Reuters, the minister addressed his NATO colleagues.
“I encourage you to approve the decision to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance as one of the results of the meeting of NATO foreign ministers on December 3-4, 2024,” he stressed.
We remind you that on October 16, Vladimir Zelensky announced the Victory Plan. His first point was the immediate invitation of Ukraine to NATO.
Politico reported that seven NATO countries are reportedly opposed to inviting Ukraine. In addition to the USA, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia, three more “non-obvious” countries will contest Ukraine’s invitation.
