In June 2024, more than 10 thousand Ukrainian refugees applied for financial assistance in Slovakia, and in July 2024 there were already 3,440 people.
Slovakia will reduce state support for Ukrainian refugees from March 1, 2025. The Spectator reported this on Friday, November 29.
Starting in the spring, refugees will be allowed to stay in temporary accommodation centers for just 60 days (instead of the current 120 days). In addition, housing assistance will be provided for the first 60 days after arrival.
These changes will not apply to vulnerable social groups – pensioners over 65 years old, children under five and their guardians.
Slovakia’s Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Peter Krauspe explained that most Ukrainian refugees find work and accommodation within two months of arrival, and these changes will allow the country to save up to 2 million euros.
At the same time, the representatives from the opposition party Progressive Slovakia criticized the decision, noting that the changes were made without consultation with non-governmental organizations that help refugees.
Since the start of the temporary protection mechanism in Slovakia, on August 22, 2024, 153,070 people have applied for it. At the same time, 25,748 cases of termination of temporary protection were recorded.
It was previously reported that Ukrainian refugees in Lithuania will be given a one-time payment of 176 euros.
Meanwhile, in Norway, the automatic acceptance of protection for Ukrainian refugees from six regions – Lviv, Volyn, Transcarpathian, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil and Rivne regions has been cancelled.
