Cyprus has started the relevant negotiations with the United States, but fears a possible veto from Turkey.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodolidis confirmed the country’s intention to become a NATO member, despite Turkey’s veto. Negotiations are currently underway in Washington regarding the possibility of accession. Skai reports.
According to him, Turkey’s refusal to recognize the Republic of Cyprus hinders the modernization of the National Guard and limits the possibility of obtaining military equipment. The president publicly announced such plans for the first time, noting that the issue was discussed with US President Joe Biden during a visit to Washington.
Cyprus has begun negotiations with the United States and the European Union to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities. Consultations on the modernization of naval bases from the EU and air bases from the US continue today.
Turkey’s veto remains an obstacle to Cyprus’ entry into the union. The inclusion of a new member in NATO requires the consent of all 32 countries, and Ankara has repeatedly spoken out against it.
Note that the situation in Cyprus has a peculiarity: the island was actually divided in 1963, when clashes began between the two main ethnic groups, the Greek-speaking and the Turkish-speaking Cypriots.
It was completely divided in 1974 after Türkiye occupied the northern third of the island. Since then, this division has been maintained. Attempts to reunify the country by the UN did not yield a final round of negotiations in 2021.
Let’s recall that the Greek publication Kathimerini, citing sources, said that Cyprus has decided to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
