The spokesperson of the department responded to the intentions of the Slovak Prime Minister with a rhetorical question: what kind of “celebration only in Moscow and ignores the role of Ukraine in the Second World War?”
Russia is trying to monopolize victory over Nazi Germany in World War II and minimize Ukraine’s role in the overall victory. With its current aggression, Moscow “trampled on the memory of the joint struggle.” The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Georgy Tikhy, said this at a briefing.
The official responded in this way to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s statement that he accepted the invitation of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to visit Moscow on May 9.
“We can remind you that with its aggression against Ukraine, the Kremlin trampled on the memory of the joint struggle in the Second World War, the fight against Nazism,” said the Foreign Ministry spokesman.
Tikhy emphasized that Ukraine actively participated in the victory against Nazism, and its role cannot be underestimated. However, Russia has tried for years to steal this victory, which is an insult to the millions of Ukrainians who lost loved ones in the war.
“Putin caused this insult a long time ago, but we call on all our partners and European leaders to remember the facts that the total losses, as you know, no one knows the exact number, but this is estimated from 50 to 75 million people from 8 to 10 million of the dead were Ukrainians Almost a quarter of the population of Ukraine then,” said Tikhy.
He also noted that in 1943, almost all Red Army soldiers came from Ukraine.
“So we have a question: what kind of celebration is this in Moscow only and ignoring the role of Ukraine in World War II swept first from the west to the east, and then from east to west,” asked Tikhy rhetorically.
As you know, Robert Fico plans to be the first representative of his country to visit Russia on an official visit since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He is planning a visit to Moscow for official events marking the end of World War II in Europe, which Russians celebrate on May 9.
