On November 28, the European Parliament did not recognize the results of the parliamentary elections in Georgia and called for new ones.
The European Parliament also calls for sanctions against the head of the Georgian Dream, oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili. And also against Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and head of parliament Shalva Papuashvili – they are considered responsible for “anti-democratic actions.”
Meanwhile, the Georgian parliament, unrecognized by the opposition and the president, approved the government. Deputies of the ruling Georgian Dream party unanimously expressed confidence in the government led by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze with 84 votes. The opposition, which does not recognize the results of the parliamentary elections on October 26 and the legitimacy of parliament, did not participate in the voting.
Three ministers were replaced in the government after the parliamentary elections. All new ministers headed parliamentary committees in the former parliament and became deputies in the newly elected parliament.
Ilya Darchiashvili was replaced as Minister of Foreign Affairs by Maka Bochorishvili. In the last parliament, she headed the Committee on European Integration.
Anri Okhanashvili, who headed the parliament of the previous convocation, became the Minister of Justice, replacing Rati Bregadze. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture is headed by David Songulashvili, former head of the Committee on Sectoral Economics and Economic Policy. He replaced Otar Shamugia.
The plenary session, at which Kobakhidze presented the government program and the composition of the government, lasted less than two hours. The deputies did not ask any questions to the candidate for prime minister.
On November 27, Georgian Dream nominated former football player Mikheil Kavelashvili, who does not have a higher education, for the post of President of Georgia.
Therefore, Kavelashvili could not run for the post of president of the Georgian Football Federation in 2015. But now, it seems, this will not prevent him from becoming the next president of Georgia, Politico reported.
