Cypriot authorities revoked the citizenship of a number of foreigners, including Russian billionaires Oleg Deripaska, Alexey Kuzmichev, Mikhail Gutseriev, Vadim Moshkovich, as well as the former owner of Probusinessbank Alexander Zheleznyak. The names of many were published by the local publication Politis.
In total, the government’s decision affected 86 foreigners. Most of the holders of the canceled passports are Russians, including seven Russian businessmen included in Forbes’ 2024 billionaires list.
The list of foreigners was prepared about a month ago. Not only the investors themselves, but also their family members will be stripped of their passports.
Revocation of Cypriot citizenship may be justified for three reasons:
-
providing false or misleading information when submitting an application;
-
applicant’s criminal history;
-
failure to comply with the conditions of naturalization.
The Golden Passport program was launched in Cyprus in 2013 to help the country recover from the economic crisis. Citizenship is granted in exchange for an investment of at least 2 million euros in local real estate. For an additional fee, family members of investors received passports.
Earlier it became known that Cyprus decided to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
