In February, Pashinyan announced the freeze of Armenia’s membership in the CSTO. He said that the collective security agreement is really not working in relation to his country.

Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan will not go to the summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, which will take place on November 28 in Astana. This was reported by the press secretary of the head of government Nazeli Baghdasaryan in a comment to 24News.

The republic’s position on freezing participation in CSTO activities has not changed.

In 2023, Pashinyan also did not attend the CSTO summit in Minsk. The prime minister accused the organization of refusing to “fix its area of responsibility” in Armenia amid the conflict with Azerbaijan. In this regard, the politician believes that participating in the summit means that he follows a logic that questions the “integrity and territorial sovereignty” of the republic.

In February, Pashinyan announced the freeze of Armenia’s membership in the CSTO. He said that the collective security treaty is really not working in relation to his country.

In turn, Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov said that Armenian representatives informed Moscow about their decision in advance. He stressed that de jure Yerevan remains a full member of the CSTO and maintains the corresponding rights and obligations.

Let’s recall that in February, Armenia suspended its participation in the CSTO. Pashinyan declared that Yerevan can no longer rely on Russia as its main defense and military partner.

And in September, Nikol Pashinyan confirmed that Armenia may leave the CSTO because some allies did not fulfill the treaty obligations and “planned a war against us together with Azerbaijan.”

Pashinyan also said that the CSTO poses threats to Armenia’s security, existence and sovereignty, prompting a violent reaction in the Kremlin.
