In Romania, the independent candidate Kelin Georgescu and the leader of the main opposition party, Union for the Salvation of Romania, Elena Lasconi, are in the second round of the presidential election.
Kelin Georgescu is far-right and pro-Russian. It glorifies the times when Romania was an ally of the Nazis. They criticize NATO, the EU and the placement of American bases in Romania. He calls the Russian-Ukrainian war a consequence of collusion between American arms manufacturers.
Politico writes that Georgescu is “extremely religious and nationalistic.” In particular, he stated that the Russian-Ukrainian war is being manipulated by American military companies. In addition, the presidential candidate used TikTok to attract voters. Georgescu was also criticized for supporting the fascist legionary movement of Romania in the 20th century.
Elena Lasconi is pro-European and pro-Ukrainian. In particular, she criticizes the passive response of the Romanian authorities regarding Russian drones violating the country’s airspace.
The second round of voting will take place on December 8.
