Despite attempts by ultra-conservatives to cancel the competition, Switzerland has earmarked nearly $40 million to host Eurovision 2025 in Basel.
International Song Contest Eurovision 2025, scheduled to take place next May in Basel, Switzerland, is almost in jeopardy.
The reason is the actions of the ultra-conservative Christian party Federal Democratic Union of Switzerlandwhich initiated a referendum calling for the abolition of competition funds.
Opponents of the project argued their position saying the costs of holding the show – nearly $40 million – were excessive. They asked to limit the size or cancel it completely.
However, on November 24, based on the results of the vote, it was decided Eurovision 2025 will still take place in Switzerland. The government confirmed funding for the project, noting that it expects to generate about $67 million through tourists, advertising and related events.
If the initiative of the opponents wins, the competition is limited to the main show without public and cultural programs outside the stage. Now Basel is gearing up to host a full-fledged singing competition, which is expected to attract the attention of millions of viewers from around the world.
It was previously reported that Public Broadcasting received 369 applications from 304 Ukrainian performers and groups to participate in the national selection Eurovision 2025.
