The first round of presidential elections in Romania has ended – none of the candidates received the votes to win unconditionally, so the second round will take place.
The current Prime Minister, leader of the Social Democratic Party, Marcel Ciolaku, and the candidate of the Liberal-Conservative reform party, the Union for the Salvation of Romania, Elena Lasconi, are in the second round of the Romanian presidential election. Romania Journal reported this on Sunday, November 24, citing exit poll data.
According to a poll from Avangarde – CIRA, Ciolaku receives 25% and Lasconi 18% of the popular vote. Third place with 16% was taken by independent candidate Kelin Georgescu.
The data does not take into account the voting results of hundreds of thousands of Romanians abroad, which could influence the overall result.
There is no turnout threshold in the country and elections will be recognized as valid with any number of participants. According to the Romanian Central Election Commission, voter turnout was 47.66%. To be declared the winner, a candidate must receive more than half of the votes.
Regarding election violations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs received more than 340 complaints by 8 pm and imposed several fines totaling 96,000 lei (over 800,000 UAH). Investigations into 59 possible offenses are ongoing. In total, since voting began, 342 complaints have been received about violations or crimes related to the electoral process: 97 of them have not been confirmed, and 61 are under investigation.
The second round of presidential elections in Romania will take place on December 8.
We remind you that the Constitutional Court of Romania did not include a pro-Russian far-right politician in the list of presidential candidates. We are talking about Diana Shoshoaka, leader of the opposition party SOS Romania, which won two seats in the European Parliament in June.
