The number of internally displaced persons is approximately 5 million. It continues to grow, in part due to enemy advances and forced evacuations from combat areas.
Member of the parliamentary committee on human rights, deoccupation and reintegration of temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, people’s deputy Maxim Tkachenko spoke about this in an interview with the Ukrinform agency.
Now we are talking about approximately 5 million IDPs who were forced to flee from war, from the occupation of the Russian aggressor, forced to leave their homes in search of relative safety and tranquility,” he said.
Tkachenko clarified that the figures are approximate, since there are people who subsequently travel abroad or return to temporarily occupied territories.
According to him, the rapid increase in the number of IDPs is caused by the advance of the enemy and the announcement of forced evacuation, in particular:
- in the Donetsk region – Kurakhovo, Selidovo, Pokrovsk;
- in the Kharkov direction – Volchansk, Kupyansk.
Since the beginning of a new wave of evacuation, starting in May of this year, about 15 thousand people who have left their hometowns and villages have already contacted us, as people’s deputies, co-founders of the public organization “IDPs of Ukraine,” he noted. — As for the total number, according to my estimates, it is more than 200 thousand.
