Newly elected US President Donald Trump has decided on a candidate for the post of special envoy to resolve the war in Ukraine.
No such position exists yet, but Trump is seriously considering creating one. Richard Grenell may be appointed as a special representative. At one time he was the US Ambassador to Europe, and during 2017-2021 he headed the National Intelligence Service. At the same time, the final decision has not yet been made and it is possible that Grenell may refuse this role. This was reported by Reuters, citing sources.
Grenell has previously spoken out about the creation of “autonomous zones” as a way to resolve the conflict, and also opposed Ukraine’s immediate entry into NATO.
However, it is noted that Grenell has extensive diplomatic experience and knowledge of European affairs. Previously, he also served as the special envoy of the US President in negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo.
Recall that Donald Trump is nominating lawyer Matthew Whitaker for the post of US Ambassador to NATO. The newly elected US President believes that Whitaker is “a strong warrior and a loyal patriot who will promote and protect the interests of the United States.”
