On this day, Ukrainians light candles in their homes in memory of those who died from the artificial famine organized by Joseph Stalin’s regime.
In Ukraine, on Saturday, November 23, the victims of the 20th century Holodomors are remembered. This Memorial Day is celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday of November based on presidential proclamations in 1998 and 2007.
In total, in the twentieth century, Ukrainians experienced three Holodomors: 1921-1923, 1932-1933 and the famine of 1946-1947. The biggest was the famine of 1932-1933 – called the genocide of the Ukrainian people, carried out by the Joseph Stalin regime.
According to various estimates, about 4.5 million Ukrainians died then. This catastrophe was preceded by the forced collectivization of rural farms, the “dekulakization” of the peasantry, a grain buying campaign and widespread rural terrorism. The fear of famine operated in Ukraine for 22 months.
According to the law on the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, adopted on November 28, 2006, the famine of 1932-1933 was an act of genocide of the Ukrainian people, and “public denial… is recognized as a blasphemy .in the memory of the millions of victims of the Holodomor, humiliation of dignity is against the law.
By the decision of the Kyiv Court of Appeal dated January 13, 2010, the Soviet leaders – Joseph Stalin, Vyacheslav Molotov, Lazar Kaganovich, Pavel Postyshev, Stanislav Kosior, Vlas Chubar, Mendel Khataevich – were found guilty of settlement of the Holodomor in Ukraine.
According to tradition, on this day Ukrainians light candles in their homes in memory of those who died from an artificial famine organized by the Soviet government.
Commemorative events will be held throughout Ukraine. In Kyiv, the National Philharmonic will host a concert in memory of the victims of the Holodomor. Also, Ukrainian communities around the world have planned various actions and events.
We remind you that 33 countries of the world recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. Switzerland was the last to do so.
Also, related decisions were made by PACE, the European Parliament, the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church of Constantinople and others.
As you know, more than 90% of Ukrainians consider the Holodomor to be genocide of the Ukrainian people. We are talking about the majority of residents of both the western, central and southeastern regions of the country.
