The country’s Defense Minister Bill Blair said the system, which Ottawa promised to pay for, “is now in the hands of the Ukrainians.”
The NASAMS air defense system, which the Canadian government helped buy in 2023, has already been delivered to Ukraine. This is what Canada’s Minister of National Defense Bill Blair said at a meeting of the House Defense Committee, reports CBC News.
According to him, the NASAMS anti-missile system, for which Canada promised to pay $406 million almost two years ago, is now in the hands of the Ukrainians.
The Canadian government tried to speed up deliveries with large purchases made by the United States, the media noted.
The $406 million purchase was announced in January 2023, but the Canadian government did not release funds to Washington until March 2023 to pay for the system and start the process.
The United States cannot begin negotiations with manufacturers until it receives funding from Canada and obtains the necessary funds. Congressional approval is also expected.
As you know, in January 2023 Canada promised to buy the NASAMS system for Ukraine. A year later, Canada explained why there were supply problems.
