A 20-year-old citizen of the country is in prison in Norway on suspicion of attempted espionage. The man is suspected of passing information to Russian and Iranian intelligence services.
NRK reported this on Thursday, November 21.
The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) said the man was preparing to deliver information that threatened American security interests.
“Cooperation with American authorities continues, but it is too early to say exactly what data was transferred and what its consequences are,” police said.
It is implied that the man has a “curator” overseeing his espionage activities. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison. However, the prison term may be longer, as he is suspected of other illegal activities that may harm the interests of third countries, for which up to three years of imprisonment is given.
The suspect was involved in a security business in Norway, but no financial transactions with the company since its establishment were recorded. At the time of his arrest, the company registered in the name of the suspect was operating without income or expenses, and he himself received about 200 thousand Norwegian kroner (about 18 thousand dollars – ed.) in income in 2022 .
The suspect denied his guilt. His lawyer, John Christian Elden, said that the prosecution must prove if the information collected by the suspect is truly of a strategic nature within the scope of the Criminal Code.
