Today, November 21, in the morning, the Russian invaders were the first to strike Ukraine with the RS-26 Rubezh medium-range intercontinental ballistic missile, which is a potential nuclear warhead.
This was reported by the Ukrayinska Pravda publication, citing its own sources.
“Rubezh” is designed to deliver nuclear warheads. This Russian development was highly classified because it violated the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, Defense Express reports.
The missile began to be developed back in 2006, but in 2018 it was allegedly excluded from the weapons program until 2027. It was believed that Russia was focusing on the Iskander-K instead.
However, in July of this year, the Kremlin threatened to resume production of medium- and shorter-range missiles, which the RS-26 Rubezh falls under.
It is believed that the RS-26 Rubezh was created on the basis of two Topol-M stages. Its developer is the Moscow Institute of Thermal Engineering, and its manufacturer is the Votkinsk Plant, which is also responsible for the ballistic Iskanders.
The exact characteristics of the RS-26 are still unknown. It is certain that the launch weight is in the range of 40-50 tons, the range is up to 6000 km, the equipment is in the form of four separate warheads with a capacity of 0.3 Mt each, similar to those used in the RS-24 Yars. It is also believed that Rubezh can be equipped with a hypersonic glide unit of the Avangard type.
