The document submitted by the current US President gives him the authority to forgive 50% of this debt.
US President Joe Biden submitted to Congress a statement of intent to cancel half of Ukraine’s debt for economic assistance – $4.65 billion. This is what State Department Speaker Matthew Miller said in a briefing on Wednesday, November 20.
Congress in the spring supported the Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act in the amount of about $61 billion through April 2024. The terms of the document indicate that economic assistance – about 10 billion dollars – is provided to Ukraine not without payment, but as a conditional repayable debt.
However, the document Biden filed gives him the authority to forgive 50% of that debt. At the same time, the document states that the remaining 50% after January 1, 2026 will be able to be forgiven by the next US president.
Miller noted that after the White House informs Congress of the decision, lawmakers may pass a resolution opposing it. But, in his opinion, this will not happen.
“I would be surprised if Congress took such a step, given the overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress for relief. But we will follow the law,” the spokesman explained.
We remind you that the Pentagon has announced that they will send weapons to Ukraine every week.
